The Spiritual Roots to Health

Chapter 1

Cultivating health is a spiritual endeavor. In this chapter we will be reminded that each of us has a direct connection to God. We will also be reminded of the law of karma and how neglecting this important spiritual truth causes illnesses, accidents and suffering.

"Why" we get ill and suffer is a spiritual question, not a medical one. Even accidents are no accident. Modern medicine may artfully describe the mechanics of a disease, but the deeper question of "why" is not adequately addressed. That is because any suffering, tension or stress, whether it is physical, mental or emotional points to a deeper spiritual problem. In their simplest form, all spiritual problems are created because we invest our life energy into avenues that are different than the needs of our heart and soul. This is literally causes inner conflict. There are two opposing forces. Although the soul is quiet and patient, its needs are infinitely more important than our temporary, worldly goals. Ignoring the quiet voice of the soul can cause serious problems. Fortunately, we have the capability, if we choose to develop it, to overcome those problems in a lasting way. In doing so, we can satisfy our soul's primary need, which is to know ourselves as strong, independent, loving, useful and free. To know ourselves as one with our source, God. We may wonder, if our soul's purpose is so positive and great, then why don't we automatically serve it? That is because we are free to choose our own path, and we have lost touch with two important truths:

  1. We are capable of receiving personal guidance from God.
  2. We cause our own suffering, through the law of cause and effect, or law of karma.

This law states "that which we do unto others, is done unto us". The law of karma is known in virtually all religions and spiritual traditions, but very few fully understand and model it. The karmic rebound occurs at the emotional level. This means the exact circumstances that we create towards others do not need to match in our rebound experience. However, the essence of how we make others feel does. It is impacted not only by our outward behaviors and speech, but most importantly by our most private thoughts, desires and intentions. It is even effected by negativity inside of us that we may not be aware of. This negativity has an impact on our surroundings which will continue to create a karmic rebound to us, just as a magnet will continue to attract another magnetic. The many ways people intentionally cause suffering will not be the topic of this publication. However, we will learn of the many ways that we inadvertently spread suffering because of our tendency to avoid uncomfortable emotions. Our avoidance strategies result in an unconscious build up of inner turmoil. Even though we mean no harm, this turmoil will cause suffering to others and to ourselves through the karmic rebound, until we have learned to melt it away consciously. The reason few have mastered the law of karma is because many interpret it too superficially, and because its effects are often a delayed. We cannot easily see the connection of a cause and its effect. Although the law of karma impacts each of us in a personal and unique way, it does not have a personal issue with us. It applies itself to everyone exactly the same. We reap what we sow.

If we are true to our deepest needs and understand the law of karma, then the only appropriate response for every circumstance in life, is a loving one. If our thoughts, words and actions are driven by a loving intention, then eventually all that we can ever expect to come back to us in life, is a flood of love. In this ebook will learn that "loving" is not always "people pleasing" and hence the law of karma cannot be mastered by simply modeling friendly behaviors. It has more to do with our inner attitude. Holding a loving inner attitude is easy when things are going well in life, but its true power lies when it is maintained at all times, in all aspects of our life, even at our darkest hour. We may believe such a feat is impossible, but our soul, which can see things from a much bigger perspective, knows we are capable of great strengths, as long as we give our best. We have this life to live, in order to experience such an inner strength. We are given different situations over and over again to practice, until we have sufficiently mastered such a loving state of being and overcome the law of karma. Since we do not know how many more days we have left to practice, it is to our advantage to start giving our best now.

To accomplish this, at times we will learn to put forth tremendous efforts, even though others may not see the value of it. At other times, we will not act, even though every bone in our body wants to and everyone around us expects us to. The reason for such behavior is that, through our inner guidance, we will see that it is the most loving way to act. Such conduct will have a positive effect on us, and on all those around us who are open to it. It will create peace, where there was once turmoil. It will show solutions, where there was once only problems. As we learn to permanently solve our life problems, with the wisdom that comes from within, we will come to know ourselves as strong, independent, loving, useful and free. This state of being will come from deep inside and naturally expresses itself through the health of our mind, body and spirit. Despite all of its problems and the pain we have experienced due to the law of karma, we will come to genuinely love this world, and we will feel genuinely loved by this world as well.

Prayer of Saint Francis of Assisi:

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.
Where there is hatred, let me sow love.
Where there is injury, pardon
Where there is doubt, faith.
Where there is despair, hope.
Where there is darkness, light.
Where there is sadness, joy.

O Divine Master,
Grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled, as to console;
To be understood, as to understand;
To be loved, as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive.
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
And it is in dying that we are born to Eternal Life.
Amen.
